About Alpha Lambda OmegaAlpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, founded in 1908, became America’s first Greek-letter organization established by Black college women. Its roots trace back to Howard University in Washington, D.C., where Ethel Hedgeman Lyle of St. Louis, Missouri, conceived the idea for the organization. Lyle envisioned the sorority as a vehicle for enriching the social and intellectual experiences of college women through scholarship, friendship, and meaningful engagement. Since its incorporation as a perpetual organization in 1913, Alpha Kappa Alpha has expanded its mission and impact far beyond the college campus. Through a commitment to service and leadership, the sorority has empowered generations of college-educated women to improve social and economic conditions in their communities, across the nation, and throughout the world. “Alpha Kappa Alpha continues to serve as a catalyst for positive change, bringing together women across racial, national, physical, and social boundaries to strengthen individuals, families, and communities.” Alpha Kappa Alpha is a sisterhood of women who have chosen this affiliation as a pathway to lifelong growth and service. The organization promotes scholarship, ethical leadership, unity, and friendship among women while addressing issues that affect girls, women, and families. Through its extensive network of members across the United States, the Caribbean, Europe, and Africa, Alpha Kappa Alpha remains dedicated to serving communities and advancing opportunities for all.
